Intrapartum focuses on the working conditions of midwives. In the delivery ward at the National Maternity Hospital – Ireland’s oldest and largest maternity hospital – I followed women who assisted women given birth. All in all, there was an overwhelming majority of female presence at the hospital. Nevertheless, the portraits that populated the walls mainly showed prominent men from the institution’s history. Intrapartum was carried out between February 2007 and May 2007. It offers an insight into 24 hours in the delivery ward and highlights the vastly skilled, professionally trained midwife as well as offering an exploration of the delivery room with all its technical equipment; components that parents to be have come to rely on in hospitals.
